Biology and Health Sciences

The mission of the Cluster of Biology and Health Sciences is to cover the knowledge areas related to the various forms of life and thus work towards the welfare of the human being in balance with the environment. Through the integration of related programs, the School Health and Biological Sciences encourages multidisciplinary and comprehensive training and challenges its students to multiply their knowledge and practice their future professions.

A w(h)ealth of programs

The Cluster of Biology and Health Sciences offers undergraduate programs in Biological Sciences, Biomedicine, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Physical Therapy and Physical Education. Especially valued and recognized is the Master and PhD program in Dentistry, which has received high marks from CAPES, the Federal Agency Coordinating the Improvement of Higher Education in Brazil.

Post-graduate certificates and life-long learning

Even more courses and programs are offered at post-graduate level. Some are specializations, others certificates or incentivize life-long learning of professionals from the health community. Among the courses offered are Minimally Invasive Surgery, Chronic Pain, Health and Hospital Management, Functional Gastronomy, Human Physiology and Performance, Aesthetics and Dermatocosmetics; and specialized nursing courses in Intensive Therapy Nursing, Gynecological and Obstetric Nursing and Cardiology Nursing.

Immersion, immersion, immersion

The number one priority for the Cluster of Biology and Health Sciences is the immersion of its students in the health system, offering the students the chance to practice the skills they learn in the classroom. Therefore, Universidade Positivo has partnerships with six hospitals and a nursing school. Students start working with patients as of the first year of studies, supervised by a doctor and with regular feedback from their professors.
Going further, the disciplines offer a well-balanced technical and humanistic education and strongly encourage scientific research as of the start of the program. To provide students with the perfect learning environment, the university has invested in modern infrastructure, such as the morphofunctional laboratory, the clinical skills and simulation laboratory and the experimental surgery center. Equipped with the right knowledge and skills, medical students complete their program with a two-year internship in one of the accredited teaching hospitals.

Cluster of Biology and Health Sciences
Serving the community

Universidade Positivo has a strong record in serving its community, meaning not only its own students, faculty and staff but also the people of Curitiba. The Cluster of Biology and Health Sciences plays a particularly important role in this context as it offers services through three specialized clinics at little or no cost. These clinics attend a double purpose: provide low-income communities with excellent health services and give students a supervised space where to apply their knowledge and skills.

Nutrition, physiotherapy and dentistry

The Dentistry clinic focuses on remedial and healing techniques for patients seeking dental care while the Nutrition clinic offers consultancy and advice in dietetics, nutrition therapy and nutrition education for communities or individuals with the objective to improve life quality.

The Physiotherapy clinic has three specialized areas: the posture and spine clinic, a cardiorespiratory rehabilitation ambulatory and in dermatofuncional physiotherapy. To also support the patients mentally, the physiotherapy clinic has developed group programs and training offering the double benefit of socializing and physical therapy – all supported by the Physiotherapy students in a professional and professionalizing environment.

Beyond health & science

Nurses and doctors are among the most challenging professions. They often face people who are in a very difficult situation in life and need special treatment and attention. At the same time, the health system tends to value efficiency over humanity. Aiming to sensitize its students but also to prepare them for the future challenges their professions hold, the UP has created two projects: MedClown and MedCine.

Through the MedClown project, a voluntary endeavor, students learn to address hospitalized children in a creative and supporting way. The project is run annually and very much appreciated by the hospitals where it takes place and, of course, by the little patients. Another more reflective approach is presented in the MedCine project. Through the use of theater and movies, students are sensitized to key issues of their future profession, such as angry or scared patients, delivering unfortunate news or reassuring worried relatives. For sure, nothing is easy to deal with, but in preparing students, the UP hopes to make them all the more holistic and caring professionals and people.
