Sobre o nosso curso

Level: Master and Doctorate

The Graduate Program in Industrial Biotechnology from Universidade Positivo, in the Professional category, stimulated by biotechnological advances in Brazil, has as its main objective to train masters and doctors in Biotechnology and provide conditions for professionals to improve scientifically, pedagogically and professionally.

For this purpose, students enrich their knowledge through curricular courses and the development of an innovative project, in one of the areas of concentration: “Agrifood and Environmental” and “Health”. In the previous quadrennial evaluation (2013-2016), the Master’s course was evaluated with the maximum grade, concept 5, by the Technical-Scientific Council (CTC) of Capes. The Doctoral course, started in 2019, was approved by CAPES and recommended with the maximum grade, concept 5.

Biotechnology involves using cellular and molecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve the quality of life and protect the planet. Despite contemplating productive activities practiced for over six thousand years for the development of food products, such as bread and cheese, and for the conservation of dairy products, it has gained notoriety only in recent decades, being considered one of the areas of knowledge with the greatest potential for bring significant benefits to humanity in this century.

Currently, Biotechnology offers innovative technologies for food production, disease prevention and treatment, reduction of environmental impacts, production of renewable energy sources and for the development of more efficient, safe and clean processes that involve industrial production.

Recent advances in the area have contributed to overcome society’s most immediate challenges, including:

– Pharmaceutical industry: production of antibiotics, enzymes, hormones, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, diagnostic kits, formulation of pharmaceutical products, etc.

– Agriculture: production of biofertilizers, biopesticides, nematicides and plant hormones; and development of plants resistant to pests, water stress and extreme temperatures, and cereals and tubers rich in proteins and vitamins.

– Environmental science: biological treatment of solid, liquid and gaseous effluents.

– Beverage industry: production process of beer, wine, cachaça, whiskey, vinegar, etc.

– Bioenergy production: focusing mainly on the use of by-products from the agro-industrial activity for the development of biofuels.

– Food industry: production of cheeses, yoghurts, vinegars, yeasts, milks, fermented foods, natural dyes, polysaccharides, thickeners, etc.

– Veterinary medicine: medicines, vaccines, feed, nutritional bioadditives, growth promoters, antibiotics, antiparasitics, embryo production, etc.

– Forest science: multiplication of plants for the production of paper, furniture, etc.

– Cosmetic industry: production of biological ingredients, natural products, etc.

The Graduate Program in Industrial Biotechnology includes the following research topics, in their respective Areas of Concentration:

Agrifood and Environmental Area:

1.Development of processes and products for the valorization of raw materials and by-products of the Brazilian agroindustry, aiming at the production of biofuels, biopolymers, foods, beveragesand biomolecules, using fermentative processes, enzymatic processes and molecular biology tools.

2.Development of technological processes for environmental biomonitoring, bioremediation of degraded areas as well as treatment of industrial solid, liquidand gaseous waste.

Health Area

1.Development and evaluation of new technologies, systems, devices, drugsand biopharmaceuticals in the biomedical, dental and veterinary field for diagnosis, monitoring and treatment, as well as for improvement and education in the surgical field.

2.Bioprospecting of Brazilian flora and microorganisms aiming at the development of products and processes for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative, metabolicand dermatological diseases, using Cell Biology and Molecular Biology tools for in vivo and in vitro experimentation.

3.Development of new cosmetic and dermatocosmetic products.
